Help:Contents
From JR
Wikis are communal, organic documents. Everyone can contribute to them. Everyone can edit, add, delete. This is not only a feature, it is the basis of wikis. YOU MUST PARTICIPATE FOR IT TO WORK.
There are a few main things to know:
Contents |
[edit] Getting Started
That sounds pretty scary, needing me for this whole thing to work. It can be at first, but let's start somewhere - you. While some wikis allow anonymous editing, we cut down on spam by requiring users to create an account. Because we are an organization which is about joyful creation and ideas unencumbered, we hope you don't want to be anonymous. If you do, create a pseudonym so you can still contribute while protecting your identity.
[edit] Creating an Account
==>
You must request an account - it won't be immediate, but it'll be quick. Fill out the form and send it off. Again, this is to deal with spam. Also so we know you're there. Hello!
[edit] Your Profile
See your name in the upper right corner? It's red - on wikis, that means it's a page that is referenced but has no content. Go ahead and click it. You should have the opportunity to input text into a box.
- Tell us about yourself. If you're not sure what to say, you might try this out:
== Basics == Name, nickname, picture, role at Jigsaw == Contact == *e-mail *phone (if desired) *hours often in space == Interests == == Current Projects == == Win Conditions == *What it means to you to be "Winning at Life" *What it means to you to be "Winning at Jigsaw"

[edit] Pages
Wikis are comprised primarily of pages which link to each other.
[edit] Editing an existing page
Click Edit on your upper right hand side. You will be presented with a box in which to edit the text. Be sure to add a Summary before saving the page. This helps other people know what you did. Equivalent to commenting out your code. Show a preview and check your work and formatting before Saving the page. On our wiki set up, you must be logged in to edit and create.
[edit] Creating a new page
You can create a new page by either following a red link or going to the URL of a non-existent page. It will give you the option to create the page.
[edit] Linking
[edit] Internal Links
Most pages link to other pages on the wiki - it is the organic document about the subject or organization, and so is mostly self-referential. You can link to another page in this wiki with[[double brackets
]]. This will link to an existing page with that title, or give you a red link with which to create one.
- Capitalization and spacing matter. An underscore _ is synonymous with a space.
- The text in the double brackets is the display text and the page title. To make the display text to be different from the page title, include the page title first and the display text after a pipe.
[[PageTitle|Like so]]
[edit] External Links
When you want to link to an outside source, you use single brackets instead of double.
[http://website.com like so]
Similarly to the internal reference, the display text comes after the first space character.
- You can tell if a link is external based on the little icon next to it.
[edit] Categories
One of my favorite parts of wikis are the Categories. This is a tagging system which auto-populates a Category Page. That way, you can find anything that has to do with a certain subject easily, or add a page to a category you think it belongs in so others can locate it easily.
[edit] Category Pages
Body
- You can describe the Category itself in the Category Page, just as you would any other wiki page. See, for instance, Category:Curated_Areas.
- When adding a category, it automatically adds to the bottom of the page, regardless of where the reference exists in the text. To refer specifically to a Category page, as done here, you must make it an external link.
Pages in category
- Below the body are listed all pages which someone has added that category name to at the bottom.
[edit] Adding a page to a category
You do this by typing in[[Category:Category_Name]].
- To keep Categories clean, check out the Special:Categories page. Remember, capitalization and spacing matter! Adding Category:Curated_areas or Category:CuratedAreas will spin up different category pages than the main Category:Curated_Areas.
[edit] Formatting
First, you should know that formatting is less important than content. Someone compulsive like me or Lion will come along and format later. It's ok - not an insult to you, but a desire to make a more usable community document. Here are the basics.
[edit] Headers
h1 through h5 correspond to the number of equal signs on either side of the header word. So, Help:Contents#Formatting is h2 and Help:Contents#Headers is h3. I don't start with h1 for visual reasons, but you are welcome to.
= Header1 = == Header 2 == === Header 3 === etc
You can format headers to link internally, externally, be in italic, etc.
[edit] Indexes
These headers automatically form the indexes you see at the top of the page. Yay wikis!
[edit] Italics and Bold
Italics are made by using double single quotes without a space.
''This will end up italic''
- This will end up italic
Text is emboldened by placing it in triple single quotes.
'''like so.'''
- like so.
[edit] More Wiki Markup
* Bullet points are made with astricks. For each asterisk, a bullet. ** So this has two.

:Indents are made with colons. ::Again, the more colons, the further in it indents.

[edit] Even more, but elsewhere...
[edit] I Messed Up. / Spam / History
No worries!
This is where Histories come in handy.
- Click on "View history" in your second layer right hand side.
[edit] Want to know more?
[edit] Uploading images
- Click "Upload file" on the bottom of the left hand menu.
- Find the file on your desktop
- Upload, changing the name if you desire.
- Insert the image with a double brackets and File:file_name.jpg
[edit] Play - sandbox
Get your hands dirty! I've recreated this page in the Sandbox. Edit it. See what formatting I used. Change the formatting. What did it do? What have others done (look at the history)?
[edit] Special pages - how do they work?
The Special:SpecialPages are awesome - they show you a bit more of the structure of the wiki. Poke around, see what you find. Remember, participation is not only encouraged but essential. What do different things do?
[edit] Wikimedia
Jigsaw's wiki is a wikimedia instance. You can find out more on their website.
[edit] Have Questions?
Why not add them to the Help_talk:Contents page?
- tip: you can easily sign and timestamp your entry by adding four tildas
~~~~
